A voice carrying generations of Romani tradition to the world. 🇭🇺✨
Mónika Lakatos — Hungary is a world-renowned Oláh Romani singer whose artistry is deeply rooted in the vocal traditions, oral history, and cultural heritage of the Roma people.
Born in Budapest into an Oláh Roma family, Mónika grew up singing within her community before gaining international recognition with the acclaimed folk ensemble Romengo. She later developed projects including Mónika Lakatos and the Gipsy Voices and the Mónika Lakatos Trio, creating vibrant, percussive performances shaped by vocal rhythm, traditional instruments, and the powerful storytelling of Romani musical heritage.
In 2020, Mónika made history as the first artist of Romani descent to receive the WOMEX Artist Award, recognizing her extraordinary contribution to cultural preservation and world music.
At SHE ARTS, her voice becomes a bridge between generations and cultures—carrying a living tradition from Hungary to Cairo.
